Yoga Nidra Precautions You Must Take

Some people have bad experiences with Yoga Nidra. A bad experience happens when you don’t prepare properly, don’t follow instructions, and don’t take precautions. We have discussed the first two aspects. Now, it’s time to list the precautions you must consider while doing Yoga Nidra at home. Have a look at these.

  1. Stick to a Particular Yoga Nidra Practice

There are different types of Yoga Nidra practices out there. You have to decide what suits you the best, whether it’s Yoga Nidra by Swami Satyananda Saraswati or Richard Miller’s iRest Methodology or any other Yoga Nidra practice.

The whole purpose is to identify the most suitable practice and stick to it. Don’t practice a couple of sessions and then switch over to the other one. Be clear and consistent if you want to attain mastery over Yoga Nidra.

  1. Start with Shorter Cycles

A Yoga Nidra session may last from 10 minutes to more than an hour. For a beginner, even 10 minutes is a long duration because you are simply not habitual to the practice. If you try to take it longer than 10 minutes in the beginning, you may either doze off or may experience difficulty to focus on the instructions. Eventually, you will not be able to enter the preferred state of consciousness in Yoga Nidra.

Begin with short cycles of Yoga Nidra, preferably 5 to 10 minutes long. Once you get a hold of it, gradually increase the duration of the sessions. You must attain a state where you are not influenced by the external distractions. Your awareness must enter into a state of consciousness experienced between sleep and awake.

  1. Practice Yoga Nidra without Falling Asleep

Believe us, Yoga Nidra is so relaxing that you may simply fall asleep within a few minutes. Well, if you struggle to get proper sleep after the day ends, then you should be happy about falling asleep during the session. But if you aim to expand your consciousness and increase your productivity, going off to sleep while practicing Yoga Nidra is certainly a bad idea.

To avoid falling asleep, you can affirm yourself that you are awake and aware. Say it once you begin the session, and at times when you feel you are nearing the unconscious state of sleep. Another way is to focus on the voice in the instructional audio recording. Listening to the instructions ensure that you are mind is awake, even though your body is at rest.

  1. Don’t End it Abruptly

Attaining the superconscious state in Yoga Nidra takes time. You gradually shift your awareness from the wakeful state to a semi-conscious state. The whole process is smooth and subtle. Whether you are at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end; the transitions are gradual, and not fast.

So if you end the Yoga Nidra session abruptly, shifting your consciousness immediately to wakeful state; you may feel confusion and irritation. Since your nervous system, heart rate, and breathing are relaxed, they may not adapt quickly according to a sudden change. Therefore, you must gently regain conscious state without any hurry.

  1. Pregnant Women take Precautionary Measures

Ideally, Yoga Nidra should be done in Shavasana position because, in this position, your body is completely relaxed, without any tension at all. However, exceptions are always there. Some practitioners may feel uncomfortable in Shavasana. They may assume other positions, such as lying on the right side, left side, or sitting on the chair.

Pregnant women should lie on their left sides so that there is no constriction in the inferior vena cava. Practitioners can also lie on their right sides or sit on the chair in an upright position. For support, they can use props like bolsters, blocks, pillows, blankets, mats, and so on.

  1. Seek Expert Help for Advanced Yoga Nidra Practice

Yoga Nidra is an ancient art of the Yogis. It takes years of practice under an expert to perfect the art of Yoga Nidra. Therefore, it is recommended to seek the advice of a Yoga Nidra expert if you want to learn the art of guided relaxation. You can try Yoga Nidra at home by listening to audio instructions. But if you’re going to advance further, find a Guru who can guide you properly.

There are tons of videos, blog posts, articles available on the internet. Not only this, various Yoga Nidra centers are running across the globe. They claim to be subject experts, but in reality, they are practitioners who are trying to teach others. You will not benefit when you learn from them.

Look out for a certified teacher with prior experience and who is an authoritative figure in the Yoga Nidra practitioner fraternity.
